Neil Canning

Neil Canning

Neil Canning is a contemporary painter and printmaker. Since 1997, he has been based in Cornwall. Many of his paintings are inspired by the dramatic coastline close to his home. Through abstraction, Neil conveys the constantly changing light and weather patterns where land meets sea. His gestural brushwork and colour palette echo the power of the elements.

Whilst living in St Ives, Neil formed friendships with Sandra Blow and Trevor Bell, and was very much part of the town’s artistic dynamic. In 2007, Neil’s work was included in the prestigious exhibition Art Now at Tate St Ives, which established the next generation of artists working in the area.

In 2011, Neil received an Honorary Doctorate from the university of Exeter ‘for an outstanding contribution to contemporary British art’, and won first prize in the ING Discerning Eye exhibition. Neil has worked on major projects with John Lewis plc, British Land plc and Cardiff Central Library, among others. His work is in many public, private and corporate collections worldwide.
